SIMs and eSIMs for Travel in Korea: Do You Need a Phone Number Too?

Check your phone and activation timing first

First check whether your phone supports eSIM and whether it is carrier-locked. Also find out when the product's validity period starts. Once you have decided whether to activate it at the airport or prepare it before departure, save the installation instructions so you can read them without internet access.

Can you complete SMS verification with data alone?

Data-only products may not include regular calls or incoming texts. Even if maps and messaging apps work well, you may not be able to receive contact required for delivery orders, restaurant waiting lists or taxi services, so decide which functions you need first.

Having a Korean phone number does not mean you can complete identity verification for every Korean service. Receiving contact through a phone number and meeting a service's identity-verification requirements are separate matters.

Save information you can use if you lose your connection

Save your accommodation's Korean address and check-in instructions, tickets and booking confirmations, and route to the airport in advance. When using public Wi-Fi, check the connection location and network name, and enter important information only over a trusted connection.
