Preparing to Pay in Korea: Overseas Cards, Cash and Transport Cards

Even if your overseas card works in a shop, conditions may differ for app bookings or transport-card top-ups. Check payment methods for each use, and if a payment fails, first check your order and approval records.

Remember this first

Even if your overseas card works in a shop, conditions may differ for app bookings or transport-card top-ups. Check payment methods for each use, and if a payment fails, first check your order and approval records.

Help from pre-trip preparation to going home

Find airport transport, connectivity, Korean phrases and luggage storage in one place. If you are already traveling, you can start with emergency help or the practical information you need now.

01

Consider shop, online-booking and transport payments separately

Even with the same overseas card, acceptance in shops can differ from acceptance in apps or on booking websites. Read the online service's supported-card and verification conditions, and prepare the payment methods needed to buy or top up transport cards separately.

02

If payment fails, check your order history first

A card-approval notification may not mean that your order is complete. If a failure screen appears, check your order history and card-approval status, then contact the seller or card issuer. Before repeatedly trying to pay, ask whether you can use another card or cash. Do not share your card PIN or verification codes with anyone else.

03

Manage cash withdrawals and transport-card balances separately too

Before using an ATM, check whether it accepts overseas cards and read the fees and withdrawal conditions shown on screen. A transport card's purchase price and its loaded balance are different, and you should also read the conditions for refunding any remaining balance. Having a balance does not mean you can use it like cash in every shop.
