Gyeonggi Itinerary · One Day

A Short Walk at Suwon Hwaseong and a Relaxed Day in Haenggung-dong

Instead of walking all the way around Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, choose the area around Janganmun Gate and Yongyeon Pond, then visit Hwaseong Haenggung Palace after a meal. If the rises and falls of the walls are demanding, spend more time on the paths below and in Haenggung-dong.

This suits a trip where you want both a fortress walk and a palace visit while avoiding a long walking itinerary. You can end the walk at Yongyeon according to your companion's condition, and choose somewhere to sit and rest first in Haenggung-dong.

Getting to the First Stop

Choose a train or metropolitan rail route from your Seoul accommodation to Suwon Station, then look up an onward bus or taxi to Janganmun Gate. Suwon railway station and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace are different places, so allow time to travel after alighting too.

One Day

  1. Around Janganmun Gate and Yongyeon Pond

See the fortress at Janganmun Gate and walk toward Yongyeon Pond. Enjoy the exterior scenery around Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion and decide on site whether to climb the stairs onto the walls. Do not include completing the whole circuit in the itinerary.

When starting from Suwon Station, set Janganmun Gate as your destination on the map to find a bus or taxi. Follow on-site walking guidance toward Yongyeon, and choose the paths below the walls if stairs are difficult.

  2. A Meal and Rest in Haenggung-dong

Eat and rest in Haenggung-dong before visiting Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. If the walk was enough for you, you can finish the day here.

Decide how much to walk as you come down from Yongyeon to Haenggung-dong. If tired, save the restaurant's Korean address as your destination and choose a taxi ride separately.

  3. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace

Explore the visitor areas open to the public. Because the visit involves moving between buildings, rain does not turn the whole route into an indoor visit.

Travel from your meal stop in Haenggung-dong to the entrance of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. Check Suwon Cultural Foundation notices for maintenance and restricted visitor areas before setting out.

Meals and Breaks

Choose somewhere to sit down for a meal in Haenggung-dong first. Do not squeeze the walk and palace visit back to back because of a lunch queue. Shorten the palace visit if your walking companions need a break. Ask about spiciness and allergy ingredients when ordering.

Rainy Days or Days When Walking Is Difficult

In light rain, leave out the sections on top of the walls and briefly visit only Haenggung-dong and the public areas of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. Move the fortress walk to another day if stone paths are slippery or rain is heavy.

Preparing for the Journey Back

Search again for the return route to Suwon Station from your final stop at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace or Haenggung-dong. If you booked a train to Seoul, allow for local travel and movement within the station before going to the platform. There is no need to return to the Janganmun bus stop you used on the way out.

Booking, Stairs and Weather Checks

  • The tops of the fortress walls have stairs and changes in elevation. This itinerary does not guarantee a continuous level route.
  • Choose night visits or special events at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace only during their applicable operating periods.
  • Follow Suwon Cultural Foundation's information for the day on maintenance works and restricted visitor areas.
