A Traditional-Culture Walk: Bukchon, Insadong and Jogyesa

Walk Bukchon's hanok lanes, then explore Insadong's craft streets and Jogyesa Temple. Bukchon is a residential neighborhood, so follow tourist visiting hours and access restrictions first. Be considerate of living spaces when talking or taking photos in the lanes too.

Visit in This Order

  • Bukchon Hanok Village — Follow tourist visiting hours in specially managed areas such as Bukchon-ro 11-gil, and keep noise down in the lanes.
  • Insadong Cultural Street — Check each craft shop's or gallery's opening days and activity-booking conditions.
  • Jogyesa Temple — Respect worship, events and worshippers, and visit only areas open to visitors.

Opening Hours and Bookings

Tourist visits to the red zone around Bukchon-ro 11-gil are allowed only from 10:00 to 17:00 and prohibited from 17:00 until 10:00 the next day. The same restriction does not cover all of Bukchon. Insadong shops operate individually; follow temple events and on-site hall guidance at Jogyesa.

Ordinary street walks and temple visits are separate from craft activities and temple stays. Activities and overnight programs are not included in the default itinerary.

This suggests half a day including hanok streets, craft streets and breaks. Actual time varies with your visiting pace and queues.

You Can Adjust the Plan to Your Time and Interests

  • Bukchon during Permitted Visiting Hours → Insadong → Jogyesa
  • Skip Bukchon's Residential Lanes: Insadong → Jogyesa
  • Seoul Museum of Craft Art → Insadong → Jogyesa (indoor craft exhibitions instead of Bukchon's residential lanes)

Seoul Museum of Craft Art

This alternative sees craft exhibitions before continuing to Insadong instead of walking Bukchon's residential lanes. Check booking and closure conditions separately for general exhibitions and the Children's Museum.

General exhibitions, 10:00–18:00; entry until 17:30. From 2026-09-15 to November 30, only Exhibition Building 1 extends to 21:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; Thursdays finish at 18:00.

General exhibition admission for individuals is free and self-guided. The Children's Museum is for children aged nine or under with a guardian and requires separate advance online booking for every visitor.

The regular closing day is Monday. Check the guidance below for public-holiday exceptions and partial closures.

  • General exhibitions have an exception for Monday public-holiday opening, but the Children's Museum closes every Monday. Closed on January 1.
  • From 2026-10-13 to October 25, only the first-floor lobby exhibition and passage in Exhibition Building 1 are closed. This is not closure of the entire exhibition building.
  • From 2026-10-17 to November 1, the Children's Museum's third floor is closed, and bookable individual visits cover only the Craft Village on the second floor. Reopening on November 3 is planned, so recheck before visiting.
  • Children's Museum sessions start at 10:00, 13:10, 14:50 and 16:30, each lasting 80 minutes. Do not confuse these with late hours for general exhibitions.
  • Exhibition Building 1's late opening does not apply to Exhibition Buildings 2 and 3 or the education building. Outdoor Craft Yard access is also restricted from 22:00 to 08:00.

Things to Know Before Setting Out

  • Sunday is described by Seoul's guidance as a rest day for the lanes, so an alternative excluding Bukchon's residential lanes is recommended. This is not presented as the same rule as the legal visiting-hour restriction.
  • Do not treat private hanok interiors or residents' lanes as unrestricted visitor spaces.
  • Bukchon's slopes and stairs mean this is not classified as barrier-free or low-walking throughout.

Places in the Photos

The Bukchon photos are records from 2024, before tourist visiting-hour restrictions began. Insadong's snow and Jogyesa's lanterns show conditions at the time, not current weather or events.
